Gay Cowboys, Terrorists, and Jack Bauer being hit on by a Gay Cowboy

So this weekend I had the opportunity to watch Brokeback Mountain with a group of girls.  Yes, as I a straight man I voluntarily went to see a movie about two gay cowboys.  I figured this was my one chance to see this Oscar contender and to see what all the hype was all about.  So I sat through the movie and tried really hard to not think about the fact that I was watching a love story about two gay guys in the midwest.  I wanted to really get into the story and to feel compassion for the tough love story that two individuals went through.

Well, in the end, I wasn't too convinced by the story, and couldn't feel any compassion for the characters.  I thought the movie rushed the love story, and I really couldn't believe or feel that these guys were truly in love.  Just because you spend a lot of time alone with one guy in the mountains, doesn't mean you necessarily fall in love with him and want to have unbridled sex with him so quickly.  I think the movie could've been really powerful and a great story, but I think it was just loosely done and not very convincing.  The girls who I went with really liked it, and they also cried.

I gave the movie  2 1/2 stars out of 4.
...............................

As for the 2-day 4 hour Season Premier of 24, wow.. this show kicks ass.  Jack Bauer is back to kicking some serious terrorist ass and taking no prisoners.  The graphic realities of the airport terrorist hostage situation was pretty damn powerful.  People die on the show every 15 minutes and there are people who you love to hate on the show, like the annoying President and his evil Secret Service Chief.   Fat Hobbit (Sean Astin) made an interesting debut on the show, although he seemed a bit out of place.  My only question is now that the whole world knows Jack isn't dead, aren't China and the US Secret Service going to try to kill him?

So...

Going back to Brokeback Mountain, there's a scene where the two cowboys first discover their interest in each other, when they both occupy the same tent on a very cold night.

Imagine Jack Bauer was in the tent and Jake Gyllenhaal accidentally thought that he was gay like he was?  What would Jack's reaction be?  Couldn't you imagine his intenso personality going crazy?

Top 10 lines from Jack Bauer, if he was mistakenly hit on by a gay cowboy on Brokeback Mountain:

1.  "I need a hacksaw!"
2.  "The only reason you're conscious is so I don't have to carry you."
3.  "I need answers, and I need them NOW."
4.  "Who are you working for!?"
5.  "I'm federal agent Jack Bauer, and the today is the longest day of my life."
6.  "You're going to tell me what I want to know. It's just a question of how much you want it to hurt."
7.  "Oh, my God, what did you do? What have you done?
8. "I used to be in the military. Used to do field work for the CIA. I've been to some horrible places. I've seen some pretty terrible things. I don't think I've ever been this scared in my whole life."
9.  "What is your primary objective!?
10.  "My name is not Frank.  It's Jack Bauer."

I can't wait until next week's episode.

Friday Ramblings

So yesterday I was walking to school to meet up with some classmates when I saw a really pimped out RV (aka motor home) parked on Amsterdam near Columbia.  This RV looked like one of those vehicles that celebrities ride.

There were a couple of brawny dudes with ear pieces sitting in chairs outside, and I was curious to see who that RV belonged to.  Why would it be at Columbia?  Is some hotshot celebrity applying to go to school here?

Well, I got on campus and saw that there were all these lights and camera crew focused on one of our buildings, Kent Hall.  I had no idea why they would film anything in Kent Hall... the classrooms are small and old, and there's really nothing else in there except a dark and dingy library, and a bunch of financial aid offices in the basement.

So I'm walking past Kent Hall, when I see a golf cart coming at me. Usually the golf cart is occupied by the maintenance workers at school.  But this cart had some scantily clad lady with a fur shawl riding shotgun and smiling at me and my friend as we walked by.  I took a closer look and realized it was Mariah Carey!  She looked pretty good.  She had a revealing purple dress on with a nice fur shawl around her shoulders.

So I winked at her and smiled as her golf cart drove past me and dropped her off at the side entrance of Kent Hall right into the Office of Financial Aid. Maybe she needs money?  :)

Anywayz, so that was my brush with a celebrity yesterday.   I think she's shooting a video in Kent Hall, which is really strange.  That must be some low budget video.  There are so many nicer lecture halls and buildings on campus that they could have chosen.  Well Mariah, if you need an Asian fella as an extra, you know where you can reach me.

Closing quips...   So I'm sure many of you watched the crazy USC-Texas football game last week.  At school, there are a bunch of Texas fans who constantly show me their  "Hook 'em Horns" hand signal, which looks like this:

I can't help but thinking that their retarded hand signal is the same hand signal used to signify "TWO OUTS" in baseball, or a "front quick, back quick" play in Volleyball.

Now my only question is what do you think George Bush was trying to say when he did the infamous hand signal?  Did he really mean Hook Em Horns, OR...

1.  I'm #1
2.  I love you Saddam  (in sign language - he forgot to extend his thumb)
3.  I'll take 2 orders of beatings for Saddam
4.  Heavy Metal rocks y'all!
5.  I have 2 outs - I messed up on WMDs and Katrina so I only have one lifeline left.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Winter Break Rocks!!!

I’m happy to report that I survived my first semester of B-School.  Most people think that B-School is easy and is only about partying.   Let me assure you that the first semester is actually very intense, full of group projects, homework assignments, school events, and recruiting events.  On top of all that, we still manage to go out drinking and do some “networking” several nights during the week.  Don’t get me wrong, B-School is still fun.  It’s just not as easy as most people think it is, at least for the 1st semester.

So after a crazy semester, I was happy to experience my first Winter Break since I graduated college in 1999!!! (yes, that’s a long time ago)

Here are the Top 10 highlights from my Winter Break

10.  Rented all the DVDs of Season Four for Fox’s 24 and watched the whole season in 3 days.  This show is awesome.  It’s like MacGuyver, but with a deeper plot and more action.  This show was more addicting than watching a Korean Drama!

9.
Watched the entire Making the Band 3 marathon in one night.  I still think Aubrey is FINE and has the coolest personality.  Aundrea is pretty cute too.

8.  Got caught up on Gauntlet 2 and enjoyed watching all the crazy drama between Jodie, Danny and the rest of the psycho bunch of people on the show.

7.  Watched King Kong and Chronicles of Narnia and read "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman.  I gave Kong a “B” and Chronicles an “A”.  I gave the book a "B+".

6.  Celebrated New Year’s with College buddies at a low-key bar called White Rabbit.  $80 Open-Bar from 10pm-2am, and no lines.  Good times.

5.  Played drums at a church youth retreat on a guest Praise Team with some old Columbia and NYU friends.  Playing drums on a praise team is always a blessing.

4.  Had Christmas and New Year’s meals with my family.  Great food. Good times.

3.
Went to Vail, Colorado for 6 days and 5 nights with 200 B-School peeps.  I snowboarded for 4 days and enjoyed the best snow conditions. TONS of fresh powder and beautiful weather.

2.
Partied in the outdoor hot tub at Vail after snowboarding each day.  100 degree water in 20 degree weather combined with bathing suits, bikinis and beer.  SWEET.

1.  I still have one week left of my winter break – Anyone want to meet up and watch Munich, Syriana, and/or Match Point?

I hope all you working people are having fun at work!

Back to School

I can't believe the summer is over.   My summer vacation began in March and came to a crashing halt today as I began attending classes today for the first time in 6 years.  I'm truly thankful for the summer break that God gave me.   I traveled to Europe, played MAD volleyball (indoor, grass, and beach), played softball with my church, met up with many friends for lunches and dinners, went to a few a weddings, and even played some golf.  I met great people over the past 5 months and I appreciate all the people that made the past several months enjoyable and memorable.  Mad props to NY Sideout, my church, and the new friends from NJ that God put in my life during the past several months.

Today was Day 1 of my MBA program at Columbia and if this is any indication of what it's going to be like, well, I'm in for a crazy ride.

All I did today was meet people and socialize in between some seriously boring speeches. I constantly found myself meeting new people and introducing myself.  Every day this week will consist of a full day of speeches and group bonding activities followed by a pre-party, a party, and a post-party.  B-School is literally  ONE BIG PARTY!!!!  All you do is meet people and hang out, grab drinks and meet more people.  They call this "NETWORKING". If you're shy, B-School ain't for you.

So here are my goals going into B-School:

1.  I shall make MANY non-Korean friends.   (I'm sure I'll make enough Korean friends without much effort)
2.  I shall study hard.  Ok... at least I'll try to study hard.  (But grades don't really count)
3.  I shall not talk to freshmen girls. (unless they have older sisters)
4.  I shall make this the best 2 years of my life now that I'm back in NY and at my alma mater.

Living in the city is great.  Stay tuned for my housewarming party at my tiny apartment.

Highlights from Philly

Here are some pics from our fun weekend at the Korean-American Olympics in Philadelphia.  New York Sideout (our team name) had mad fun chilling together, playing together and cheering for each other.  Mad props to Evelyn and Grace S. for the great pics.

For those with speakers, I've put on a classic song that epitomized the NY pride that we had as a team:  "Juicy", by the Notorious B.I.G.  This song is so NY and so inspiring.  We also sang it multiple times in Tommy's Car to and from the Kalbi house.  Enjoy.
